Secret Origins of Rat Fink. “DRAG?!”
Signed on the base, the carver Gyokuichi is a 19th century netsukeshi recorded in the M.T.Hindson’s Collection by Neil K. Davey. As evidence in this series of netsuke, he was greatly influenced by master carver Toen (1820-94), who is famoused for his ningyo/doll combined ittobori style wood netsuke.. Though Gyokuichi never achieved the status of his master, nevertheless, his trick netsuke in ivory were made in many clever ways. His gods and heros are more silly than reverent, and oni more humane than devilish. Throughout the subject matter in this “popping eyes series”, Gyokuichi is both bold and wild with a lively sense of humor. His netsuke designs forgo most unnecessary details, but focus on what is tactile and functional. Clearly, his main emphasis is to amuse and produce joy and laughter.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MEEEEE, SEAN AABERG. BY BRAZILIAN WEIRDO ARTIST CHICO FELIX!!! IT’S IN PORTUGUESE SO I’VE PROVIDED YOU WITH AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION BELOW.
1) PORK magazine is a pretty big catalyst for all things weirdo/rock n roll art right now, I mean you’re bringin together all the stuff I like: from the ramones to ralph bakshi, trough pizzas, burgers and Dirty Donny. But how do you found about this weirdo universe?SEAN: THIS IS STUFF I WAS REALLY INTO WHEN I WAS A KID, I JUST GRAVITATED TO ANYTHING WEIRD, GROSS, FUCKED UP & OLD. OLD MAD MAGAZINES WERE SOME OF THE CHEAPEST COMICS YOU COULD BUY WHEN I WAS A KID, FOR LIKE 10 CENTS SO I’D BUY TONS OF THOSE.I WAS THE FIRST KID IN MY SCHOOL TO GET GARBAGE PAIL KIDS WHEN I WAS 10 & I SOLD THEM TO MY CLASS-MATES. ME & MY FRIENDS WOULD READ MAD MAGAZINE, MAKE WEIRD COMEDY TAPES & DRAW COMICS. WE RECORDED DR. DEMENTO OFF THE RADIO & THAT’S WHERE I LEARNED ABOUT CHEECH & CHONG, THE RAMONES & BUBBLEGUM MUSIC. THAT’S WHAT WE DID. LATER ON I DISCOVERED THE CHURCH OF THE SUBGENIUS, ZINES & PUNK & IT WAS LIKE THE ADOLESCENT VERSION OF THE STUFF WE WERE DOING AS KIDS. THAT WHOLE WORLD SEEMED TO EXPAND MORE & MORE UNTIL THE 90S SET IN & IT DIDN’T FEEL RIGHT ANYMORE. EVENTUALLY THE REALITIES OF GETTING GIRLS & MONEY & STUFF LIKE THAT KIND OF TRAMPLED ON THE WHOLE DEAL, AT LEAST PSYCHOLOGICALLY. BUT AFTER I BAGGED A WIFE & READ GENE SIMMONS’ AUTOBIOGRAPHY I QUIT MY JOB & SET OUT TO DO THIS THING.
What led you to start PORK magazine?
SEAN: I’VE BEEN DOING ZINES SINCE I WAS 12 & DRAWING COMICS SINCE BEFORE THEN. I’VE NEVER STOPPED. I WAS THE C0-FOUNDER & ARTS EDITOR FOR A LOCAL ALTERNATIVE PAPER & THE EDITOR DECIDED SHE WAS TIRED OF THE FORMAT OF THE PAPER & I WROTE UP A BUSINESS MODEL & MAGAZINE MODEL WHICH WAS IN SHORT, CONEY ISLAND IN MAGAZINE FORM. ANYHOW, IT WAS SUCH A GREAT MAGAZINE IDEA THAT I COULDN’T IMAGINE ANYONE ELSE RUNNING IT SO I QUIT THE PAPER & WE STARTED PORK THE NEXT DAY. BABOOM.
3) PORK is about culture, art and rock n roll in all its various forms. Do
> you find easier to find rock n roll in non musical terms these days? And is
> kicks getting harder to find in music form?
SEAN: TO ME IT’S A PACKAGE DEAL & BECAUSE BOTH THE MUSIC & THE CULTURAL FORMS OF ROCK&ROLL ARE NOT WHAT THEY COULD OR SHOULD BE THESE DAYS, I EMPHASIZE ALL OF IT & REALLY TRY & PUSH THE ENTIRE WAY THAT IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE. THIS IS SOMETHING I’VE ALWAYS DONE, I CREATE CULTURAL PACKAGES. IN TERMS OF MUSIC, I’VE NEVER BEEN INTO CURRENT BANDS REALLY, BUT THESE DAYS THERE ARE A LOT OF BANDS DOING IT RIGHT & I’M TRYING TO PROMOTE THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. NOBUNNY, KING KHAN, WHITE MYSTERY, HETHER FORTUNE, HUNX, SHANNON & THE CLAMS, PERSONAL & THE PIZZAS, APACHE, GLITZ, DANNY JAMES & PEAR, THE NO TOMORROW BOYS, THEE CORMANS, ZACHARY JAMES & THE ALL-SEEING EYES, KING TUFF & THAT’S JUST THE SHORT LIST.
4) here we are in the XXI century and still theres taboo subjects,
like the Ben Lyon Indian poster. The so called rebels are getting
SEAN: WE’RE ALL SHOWING OUR TRUE COLORS. THE UPTIGHT SQUARES WHO WANT TO POLICE EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD ARE REALLY GUNG HO ABOUT THEIR TOTALITARIAN SCHEMES & PEOPLE LIKE YOU & ME WHO JUST WANNA DO OUR OWN THING, BANG A GONG, GET IT ON & GET INTO COOL STUFF ARE REALLY PUSHING HARD ALSO. WE LIVE IN AN AGE OF QUARREL.5) Nowadays, the children universe is more and more protected, when I
was a kid I read Mad, Crumb comics, watch all kinds of horror movies
and animated cartoons from the 40s with all the mayhem and out of
control gags. Today theres whole tv Channels aimed at children, with
educational programs, clean and safe. As a parent and a weirdo artist,
what do you think about that?
SEAN: I’VE ALWAYS HATED IT. WHEN I WAS A KID I KNEW THAT UPTIGHT PARENTS & TEACHERS WERE THE ENEMY & THEY STILL ARE. PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO SAY, WHAT YOU CAN & CANNOT READ OR WATCH, MAN, IT REALLY CHAPS MY HIDE. THESE KIDS WHO ARE SHELTERED FROM THE REAL WORLD OR EVEN THE FUCKED UP CARTOON WORLD END UP AS REALLY SHITTY PEOPLE ALSO. GIRLS WHO CRY BECAUSE OF SOME MINOR DISTURBANCE. BOYS WHO ARE AFRAID OF THEIR OWN SHADOW. PEOPLE GETTING OFFENDED BY THE MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS. THEY NEED TO LIVE A YEAR OR TWO IN THE GUTTER OR GO TO WAR OR SOMETHING, GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY & SHATTER THEIR PRETTY-PRINCESS DELUSIONS ABOUT LIFE ON PLANET EARTH. RAISING THREE SONS, I ONLY FEEL STRONGER ABOUT THIS. WE WATCH RALPH BAKSHI CARTOONS TOGETHER & LISTEN TO KISS IN THE CAR.6) In PORK you do the business side, interviews, reviews, artwork and
god knows what else, but do you have plans for a full Sean Aaberg
comic book in a near future?
SEAN: WE’VE TALKED ABOUT IT, I’M NOT SURE. I PROBABLY SHOULD!
